Malaysia has made strides in promoting and protecting human rights, including strengthening the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM), continued engagement with UN human rights mechanisms, ratification of ILO’s Occupational Safety and Health Convention 1981, and improvements in addressing human trafficking.

At the 39th AICHR meeting in Jakarta on 21 May 2024, Edmund Bon outlined three key developments in Malaysia on refugee rights, the death penalty, and business and human rights.
