Edmund Bon, Representative of Malaysia to AICHR, said that the rights of an accused person in a criminal case are fundamental to ensuring that he or she receives a fair trial. He added that certain fair trial rights are expressly enshrined in Articles 5 and 20 of the ASEAN Human Rights Declaration.

Edmund Bon stated that given the contributions that AICHR has made to operationalise human rights principles and practices in the region, he personally felt that AICHR is ready to more proactively respond to the pressing human rights issues facing the region as a fully-fledged Commission.
