Appeals court reserves ruling in case of voter barred from 2022 Johor polls

The Star | New Sin Yew, counsel for R.K. Tamileswaaran, submitted that damages should be awarded to his client, a registered voter, for being denied his constitutional right to vote in the 2022 Johor state election. The lawyer proposed RM10,000 as an appropriate sum. The Court of Appeal has reserved its decision in the appeal.

Federal Court agrees to hear landmark appeal on Orang Asli woman’s Muslim status

Malay Mail | The Federal Court granted leave to a 32-year-old Orang Asli woman to appeal against her registration as a Muslim, following her conversion to Islam at the age of two. A three-member panel unanimously held that leave should be granted, as the matter raises several novel questions of public importance that merit further consideration. The applicant’s legal team includes New Sin Yew.

Prosecution to challenge Muhyiddin’s application in sedition case

Malay Mail | On 4 April, former Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s lawyers filed an application to refer a legal question concerning the Sedition Act 1948 to the Federal Court. The prosecution will file a preliminary objection against the application. Muhyiddin is represented by Amer Hamzah Arshad, Joshua Tay and Lee Yee Woei.
