Free Malaysia Today | The Bangladeshi politician who was detained by the Immigration Department more than three weeks ago was released from the immigration detention centre in Putrajaya. He was met by his wife, daughter, and lawyer Edmund Bon.

Malaysia Gazette | Peguam Quayum, Edmund Bon, memohon aku janji daripada JIM bagi membolehkan mereka menunggu keputusan permohonan habeas corpus ahli politik terbabit yang dijadual untuk didengar pada 5 April ini. Menteri KDN sudah menghubungi peguam Quayum bahawa JIM akan patuh proses mahkamah sehingga keputusan dibuat mengenai status beliau.

New Straits Times | Senior lawyer Edmund Bon said his client’s family in Bangladesh had received a letter from the Immigration Department dated Jan 24, stating that Quayum will be deported within two days. This contradicted the KL High Court’s decision on Jan 18 which granted a stay on a deportation order against Quayum pending a habeas corpus hearing scheduled for April 5.

Malaysiakini | The KL High Court recorded an undertaking by the Immigration Department’s legal representative that it would not deport Bangladeshi opposition politician MA Quayum pending the disposal of his habeas corpus application, as sought by his lawyer Edmund Bon. Quayum’s daughter said deportation is a very big risk for her father.

Malaysiakini | Peguam Edmund Bon memberitahu hakim bahawa notis pengusiran JIM terhadap seorang pemimpin pembangkang Bangladesh boleh dianggap sebagai menghina mahkamah. Peguam memohon mahkamah mengarahkan JIM menarik balik notis pengusiran, atau membuat aku janji untuk tidak bertindak atas perintah pengusiran itu. Tegas Bon, kebimbangan itu bukanlah sesuatu yang remeh kerana sebelum ini pernah berlaku pengusiran individu oleh pihak berkuasa ketika permohonan pembebasan yang dikemukakan di mahkamah belum diputuskan.

Human rights organisation SUARAM alleged that Quayum’s detention was part of a systematic crackdown by the Bangladeshi government.
