Welcome Speech by NYLC Chair, Edmund Bon at the 3rd Young Lawyers Convention 2008
The young lawyers continue to be the conscience of the Bar.

The young lawyers continue to be the conscience of the Bar.

Edmund Bon observes that lawyers are essential agents of the administration and machinery of justice, and lawyers influence change. Once we as lawyers realise that change is within us, the power to change is within reach and we can take action to change things; only then will we start living our lives a little bit more, and hopefully, with less fear.

In January 2004, a 5–member panel of the Federal Court struck down a revolutionary COA decision. By affirming the constitutionality of section 72 of the Danaharta act, which provides that the courts cannot give an order to restrain the powers or actions of Danaharta Urus Sdn Bhd, the Judiciary also affirmed its impotence. If the Judiciary is not willing to protect the people, who is left to save us?

A no-holds-barred critique of the judiciary and the Bar Council.

Edmund Bon calls for the repeal of section 46A(1)(a) of the Legal Profession Act 1976, stating that young lawyers are the way forward — they represent 75% of the Bar and have the energy, idealism, and time to further the causes of the Malaysian Bar and the public good.
