SUHAKAM | The briefing on the two recently adopted ASEAN declarations, hosted by SUHAKAM and AICHR Malaysia, underscored Malaysia’s leadership within AICHR and the importance of strengthening national alignment with ASEAN’s collective human rights commitments.
Heinrich Boll Stiftung-Southeast Asia | Edmund Bon emphasised that the ASEAN declaration on environmental rights is foremost an advocacy tool, and is the regional standard. He added that the declaration should be used, as it is a commitment by 11 member states in ASEAN.

Malaysian Bar | The Bar urged the Government of Malaysia to incorporate the right to a safe, clean, healthy and sustainable environment in legislation presently under development, and systematically review all relevant laws to give effect to the principles embodied in the environmental declaration.
IISD | ASEAN’s environmental declaration authorises AICHR to develop a Regional Plan of Action on environmental rights. Whether that becomes a turning point, or another soft commitment, depends on how AICHR interprets and operationalises this mandate.
Greenpeace Malaysia | Greenpeace Southeast Asia emphasised that the focus must now move to ensuring the effective implementation of the ASEAN Declaration on the Right to a Safe, Clean, Healthy and Sustainable Environment. ASEAN Member States must take steps to translate its principles into enforceable national laws and regional mechanisms.
