The criticism and attacks on Edmund Bon, the lawyer for Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim, are attempts to interfere with his work, says MCA Youth.

Bon is the Selangor Menteri Besar’s lawyer in his defamation suit against The Malaysian Insider for accusing Khalid of abusing his position.

MCA Youth legal bureau chairman Choo Wei Sern, in a statement on Thursday, said Bon was bound by the “cab-rank rule” (which originated from English jurisdiction and obligates a lawyer to accept any work in the field he professes to practice).

Choo said since there was no conflict of interest in Bon representing Khalid, politicians should not interfere with his work as an advocate, solicitor, and an officer of the court.

“We hope that Mr Bon will be afforded the same respect and liberty as are afforded to other lawyers to carry out their duties without fear or favour in the interests of justice,” he said.

Bon had taken to Twitter to defend his decision in representing Khalid, explaining that he had been representing him since 2008.
