Malaysia’s Representative to the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) and Chair for 2025 Edmund Bon Tai Soon will chair the 41st Meeting of the AICHR at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, running from May 12 to 16.
The meeting gathers representatives from all ten ASEAN member states, with Timor-Leste participating as an observer, and will focus on regional human rights priorities, including draft declarations on the rights to development, peace, and a safe and sustainable environment.
Key agenda items include the formulation of AICHR’s Five-Year Work Plan (2026-2030) and finalisation of its 2025 Annual Report ahead of its July interface with ASEAN Foreign Ministers in Kuala Lumpur.
The session will also feature dialogues with ASEAN’s Committee of Permanent Representatives, child and women’s rights advocates, human rights educators and international partners including Australia, Norway, Japan, the European Union, Switzerland and South Korea.
Malaysia’s leadership at the meeting underscores its commitment to fostering inclusive, rights-based cooperation in line with ASEAN’s long-term vision and the ASEAN Human Rights Declaration 2012.
