English translation:

Do not be provoked or misled by inciteful Facebook post about a 2014 matter that has been settled

On 14 September 2021, a social media post titled “‘Bukan Islam tak perlu patuh pada titah Raja’ — Peguam Edmund Bon” appeared on two Facebook pages. One post was uploaded at 8.45pm and another at 8.52pm. The contents of both the posts were the same, and they were subsequently circulated on WhatsApp chat groups, among others.

The posts appeared to have been copied from a post published on 13 September 2014 on another Facebook page.

All the posts cited as their source an article by The Malaysian Insider (TMI) published on 20 January 2014. TMI’s portal is now defunct; therefore, one would not be able to access the link to TMI’s article to verify the claims in the posts.

However, checks reveal that the article is still available on Yahoo! News.

The Facebook posts attributed certain statements to our Edmund Bon. One statement was wrongly attributed to Edmund as he did not make it, while another statement was taken out of context.

Comparing the actual statements given to TMI, and the thrust of TMI’s article, with the Facebook posts will bear out what Edmund actually meant, and cut through the unethical efforts to distort the TMI article’s contents.

Edmund was merely sharing his view on the applicability of fatwas to non-Muslims as interpreted by the Federal Court in the 2009 Sulaiman Takrib case.

The police investigated the TMI article in 2014, and no further action has been taken since.

These posts re-published seven years later were meant to provoke and/or mislead their readers. The publishers wanted to incite hate.

Reports have been made to Facebook for action to be taken against the posts.

We advise everyone to stop circulating the posts and contents of the same. Should they cross your path, do report them to the platform where they are hosted.
