We acted for two of the six former National Defence University of Malaysia (“UPNM”) cadets who were charged with murder at the High Court.

On 28 February 2025, the Federal Court allowed our clients’ appeal, reversed the murder conviction and death sentence imposed by the Court of Appeal, and reinstated the decision of the High Court, which had found our clients guilty of the lesser offence of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and sentenced them to 18 years’ imprisonment.

The full grounds of judgment delivered by the Federal Court in Muhammad Akmal Zuhairi bin Azmal & 5 Ors v PP, and the brief grounds of judgment, can be accessed here and here, respectively.

Amer Hamzah, Joshua Tay and Lee Yee Woei acted for Muhammad Akmal Zuhairi bin Azmal and Muhammad Azamuddin bin Mad Sofi.
