Former Lembaga Tabung Haji chairman Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim will remain in police custody until tomorrow under a two-day remand order to assist in a cheating investigation.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years, whipping, and a fine upon conviction.
His lawyer, Datuk Amer Hamzah Arshad, said Azeez must comply with the remand order despite having been granted RM450,000 bail with two local sureties for a separate charge under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act.
“He will remain in police custody until the remand order expires, after which he can be released.
“Once the remand expires tomorrow, he can return home provided there is no extension,” Amer said.
Amer, who appeared alongside co-counsel Datuk Abu Bakar Isa Ramat and Ashok Athimulan during proceedings, said the bail money would be posted today.
“We are in the midst of determining who his bailors will be to execute the bail process.
“We do not want any delay in settling the bail should he be released earlier from police remand. Everything will be sorted out today,” he said.
Amer added that Azeez was in good spirits but upset over the charges, describing the allegations against him as wrongful.
“He is determined to clear his name. The legal team is eager to examine the case and defend him,” he said.
